The Shire of East Pilbara
|
Two billion years the East Pilbara land was a violent land. Massive earthquakes saw the sea bed emerge from the depths. Then it was time for nature to go to work. Today the East Pilbara is a beautiful but harsh and unforgiving land. It is also a rich land. The Shire of East Pilbara covers an area of 372,000 square kilometres about the same area as Japan. |

It is also home to the world's largest single open-cut iron ore mine. The town on Newman was created to house the population necessary to operate the huge mine and it has all of the services you’d expect in a major regional centre including a modern fully equipped hospital, a police station, a public library and childcare services. Marble bar and Nullagine are the other two towns in the shire. Both were gold rush towns. Unfortunately the goal dwindled as did the populations. |
